Professor Wang Hui Elected Member of the Academia Europaea

On April 24th, Tsinghua Professor Wang Hui from the School of Humanities was officially elected as a Member of the Academia Europaea (MAE) for the year 2024, according to the official website of the prestigious Academy.

Wang Hui, Distinguished Professor in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and Professor at the Departments of Chinese Literature and History, Tsinghua University, serves as the founding Director of the Tsinghua Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences. His research interests include Chinese intellectual history, modern Chinese literature and political and social theory.

Professor Wang is the author of more than twenty acclaimed books, including The Birth of the Century, The Rise of Modern Chinese Thought, Depoliticized Politics, The “Tibet Issue” Between East and West, The Politics of Imagining Asia and China’s Twentieth Century.

His works have been translated into multiple languages such as English, Japanese, Korean, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish and Slovenian, receiving prestigious international recognition. Among many other honours and awards, Professor Wang Hui won the Luca Pacioli Prize in 2013 and the Anneliese Maier Research Award in 2018.

The Academia Europaea was established in 1988 and is the Pan-European Academy of Sciences Humanities and Letters on the initiative of the UK’s Royal Society and National Academies of France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, and other European countries, and is headquartered in London, UK.

The MAEs include leading experts from the physical sciences and technology, biological sciences and medicine, mathematics, the letters and humanities, social and cognitive sciences, economics and the law, encompassing 23 academic disciplines with renowned scholars from around the world.

The election of MAEs primarily takes place among European scholars, with the acceptance rate for foreign members not exceeding 5%, making it a highly esteemed international academic honor. Since its establishment, about 5,500 MAEs have been elected, including nearly 90 Nobel laureates.

It is the only Europe-wide Academy with individual membership from Council of Europe states and other nations across the world. Invitations are made only after peer-group nomination, scrutiny and confirmation as to the scholarship and eminence of the individual in their chosen field. Election is confirmed by the Council of the Academia.
